Period chocolate: what it is and why it is not just candy

"Period chocolate" is a search that barely existed five years ago and now has a shelf. If you have wondered whether it is a real category or just a dark bar with a lavender wrapper and a markup, this is our honest answer. We make one. We are still going to tell you where the evidence stops.

What period chocolate actually is

Period chocolate is dark chocolate with added functional ingredients, almost always magnesium, sometimes ginger, sometimes herbs, made and marketed for the days around your period. The idea is not that chocolate is medicine. It is that you were going to eat chocolate that week anyway, so the bar might as well carry things that have some evidence behind them. Ours is a dark chocolate bar with magnesium and other functional ingredients, sold as a pouch of eight bars, one per cycle.

What the magnesium evidence says, and where it stops

Two old trials do most of the work in this category, and you should know both. In 1991, Facchinetti and colleagues gave 32 women 360 mg of magnesium a day from day 15 of the cycle to the start of their period, for two cycles, and found lower premenstrual negative-mood scores than placebo. In 1998, Walker and colleagues gave 38 women 200 mg of magnesium a day for two cycles and found no difference at all in the first month; in the second, symptoms of fluid retention (bloating, breast tenderness, swelling) were lower than placebo. That is the honest shape of it: small groups, mood and bloating rather than pain, and an effect that took a cycle to show up. ACOG's dysmenorrhea guidance says magnesium may be helpful, but not enough research has been done to recommend it for period pain. We agree with ACOG.

What plain dark chocolate does on its own

More than you might think, on the magnesium count alone. USDA lists 70 to 85% dark chocolate at 228 mg of magnesium per 100 grams, so a 1-ounce square carries around 64 mg, about a fifth of the 310 to 320 mg an adult woman needs in a day. And there is one small trial of the chocolate itself. In 2023, 45 women aged 17 to 24 with period pain were given either 35 g of 70% dark chocolate, 330 mL of coconut water, or 400 mg of ibuprofen on the first day of their period. Two hours later, pain scores had dropped 3.87 points with the chocolate, 2.87 with the coconut water, and 4.6 with ibuprofen. Ibuprofen won. The gap between it and the chocolate was not statistically significant, which sounds exciting until you notice it was 15 women per arm, one dose, and nobody was blinded. It is a reason to run a bigger trial, not a reason to skip the ibuprofen.

The flavanol claim, handled carefully

Brands love the word flavanols. The real evidence is a 2017 Cochrane review of 35 trials and 1,804 mostly healthy adults that found cocoa flavanols produce a small reduction in blood pressure over two weeks or more. That is a finding about blood vessels, not cramps, and the doses in those trials averaged 670 mg of flavanols, far more than a square delivers. We mention it because it is true, and we do not build claims on it because it is not about periods.

What period chocolate is not

It is not a painkiller. A Cochrane review calls NSAIDs a very effective treatment for dysmenorrhoea; no chocolate has that kind of evidence and ours does not claim it. It is not sugar-free: dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate and still has some. It is not a supplement in disguise, either. A bar cannot carry a trial-level magnesium dose and still taste like chocolate, so anyone promising 360 mg in a square is either wrong or selling something chalky. And nobody has run a trial on our bar specifically. The trials above are about magnesium and about plain dark chocolate. We are not going to pretend they were about us.

What we make and why

Girl Chocolate is a dark chocolate bar made for the days around your period. Made for your cycle. Supports PMS relief*: cramps*, mood swings*, hormonal bloating*. Inside is dark chocolate with magnesium and other functional ingredients; the full list is on the pack and on the product page. A pouch is eight bars, which is one cycle if you have one a day through the rough week, and the point of the pouch is that the bar is already in the drawer on day one instead of being a thing you have to go and buy. If you want to know which part of your cycle hits hardest, the Period Type quiz takes two minutes. And if what you actually want is the food-first version, our guides to dark chocolate and magnesium for cramps and foods that ease period cramps do not require buying anything.
